In a democratic and modern state, the law should apply equally to everyone. However, it is often seen that the issue of “hurting religious sentiments” is treated as if it is more important than all other rights and freedoms. This raises an important question: are religious sentiments truly above the law?
Every individual has the right to practice their own religion and beliefs. At the same time, others also have the right to ask questions, express criticism, and share different opinions. If any ideology, religion, or belief system is placed beyond criticism, it can harm the environment of free discussion and intellectual thought.
However, criticism and hatred are not the same thing. If rational discussion, satire, opinions, or questions are always labeled as “offensive,” then freedom of expression becomes restricted. On the other hand, intentionally spreading hatred or encouraging violence is also unacceptable.
In a just society, the law should remain neutral and ensure equal value for everyone’s rights. Religious sentiments deserve respect, but they should not completely suppress the fundamental freedoms of others. Building a healthy society requires tolerance, rational thinking, and mutual respect.
